Aquatic Therapy

Where:  YWCA downtown Greensboro Pool Therapy
                    1 YWCA Place, 27401

When: Tuesday- Thursday 2:30-3:30pm

Benefits of Aquatic Therapy:

  • Ease of motion including passive and active/resistive techniques
  • Decreased pain with ROM and strengthening
  • Multi-planar strengthening techniques
  • Safe environment for early core stability training
  • Early intervention for sports-specific and work related activities
  • Maintenance or improvement of cardio fitness if patient is otherwise compromised
  • Early gait training
  • Neck level immersion- 10% of body weight on joints
  • Chest level immersion- 20-35% of body weight on joints
  • Waist level immersion- 50% of body weight is on joints
  • Hydrostatic pressure reduces edema and blood pooling
  • Turbulence of water increases proprioceptive feedback
  • Heart rate is 15 beats lower in a cool pool than with land exercises with the same cardiovascular benefits
  • Buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure cause the central return of lymph and compression of soft tissues which mobilizes extracellular fluid
  • Blood supply to muscles increases this improves oxygen delivery to muscles and improves removal of lactate and other metabolic products
  • Decreased joint compression forces

FAQ’s:

1. Why should I participate in the aquatic program? 

  • The water provides a safe and less painful environment to increase motion and function in the early stages of the rehab process.   The YMCA has a state of the art chair lift that accommodates  up to 400 lbs.

2. What temperature is the water?

  • Between 86-88 degrees.

3. What should I wear?

  • A bathing suit or shorts and a t-shirt. Bring your own towel.

4. How soon after surgery can I get in the water?

  • As soon as the MD approves pool therapy. Incisions have to be completely healed.
