History of Guilford Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center

Today’s healthcare system, perhaps more than any other time in history, is a difficult entity to navigate. Oftentimes healthcare consumers have multiple maladies occurring simultaneously. Traveling to multiple healthcare providers can lead to frustration, fatigue and overall aggravation of their ailments.

Guilford Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center (GOSMC), a division of Southeastern Orthopaedic Specialists, had the foresight over 25 years ago to begin the process of providing their patients with a central location to receive orthopaedic care and physical rehabilitation for their injuries. Dr. Vincent E. Paul was the chief pioneer in this area. His vision was to combine high quality surgery, in-office care and sports medicine style rehabilitation facility all at one site.

Dr. Paul began his orthopaedic practice in 1981. But it wasn’t until 1986 when he and Dr. David Dye and Dr. Murphy began practicing together that Dr. Paul’s vision came to its first reality. During this time, the practice grew to the point where other orthopaedic physicians were brought in to begin their careers.

In 1989, GOSMC was born at 809 Green Valley Rd. College as well as high school athletes now had a facility that could care for their pre-participation physical examination all the way through to the recovery of function after an injury. This concept also spilled over to provide all patients with this comprehensive approach and state of the art technique.

When the early 1990’s arrived, Doctors Paul and Dye were joined by Dr. Frank Rowan. Dr. Rowan brought an extensive and prestigious military background to the practice. With his advanced training in total joint replacement techniques, Dr. Rowan quickly became one of the areas most sought after physicians. Simultaneously, Dr. Rowan’s mechanical background and experience in treating our country’s Armed Forces gave him the exposure in becoming an expert in treating work related injuries.

As GOSMC grew from a general orthopaedic practice into a sports and work related injury treatment facility, additional staff with the required skill sets for these areas were added in the Sports Medicine Center. Not only did licensed physical therapists staff the Sports Medicine Center, so did certified athletic trainers, physical therapist assistants, licensed massage therapists, and occupational therapists. Mr. John O’Halloran is credited with the phenomenal growth and success of this center.

In the mid 1990’s, Doctors Paul, Dye, and Rowan were joined by Dr. Peter Dalldorf, a sports medicine fellowshipped trained orthopaedic surgeon. Dr. Dalldorf came from the Houston area where he served as team physician for the Houston Astros, Oilers, and Rockets. Dr. Dalldorf then became one of the areas most sought after physicians for sports related injuries. His calm, skilled demeanor is most valued by all.

As time progressed Dr. Dye decided to retire in 1997. Dr. John Graves then joined Drs. Paul, Rowan and Dalldorf in practice. Dr. Graves brought another unique background to the group. Like Dr. Rowan, Dr. Graves proudly served his country in the Armed Forces. He spent a tour of service in the Persian Gulf before joining GOSMC. In addition to complementing Dr. Rowan’s military and joint replacement background, Dr. Graves added to Dr. Dalldorf’s sports oriented practice. The group was also delighted that Dr. Graves had additional training in hand surgery.

As the specialized services of the physicians grew, the Sports Medicine Center also grew. A certified hand therapist was on board by this time. Later Dr. Al Bartko joined GOSMC in 2000 as a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist. Out of this collaboration, the Sports Medicine Center established an industrial rehabilitation program that assisted in the safe and expedient recovery of function for injured workers.

2001 brought the addition of Dr. Dominic McKinley, a primary care sports medicine physician. Dr. McKinley complemented GOSMC’s sports medicine services by providing non-orthopaedic medical care to athletes and their families. In addition, Dr. McKinley brought training in the measurement and manufacturing of customized foot orthotics to GOSMC. Dr. McKinley became a Certified Bone Densiometrist since joining GOSMC and the facility is currently offering in-house Bone Densitometry Studies for the treatment of osteoporosis.

Dr. Hao Wang recently joined GOSMC to continue the tradition of physical medicine and rehabilitation services. Dr. Wang brings the unique aspect of having been fully trained as a trauma surgeon in Beijing, China before pursuing a career in the United States in anesthesia and later in physical medicine. His latest posting was on the faculty of UNC Chapel Hill where he brought his special perspective to bear on pain-lessening procedures of difficult spinal problems. An in-office C-Arm currently provides the capacity of on site spinal injections.

In summary, a vision that started in 1981 has made great strides in realizing its potential. In 2010, all members of the physician and rehabilitative staffs are committed to continuing their innovative spirits well into the future in the name of superlative orthopaedic patient care.
